Explorers like Hernando de Alarcón and Melchor Díaz passed through in the 1500s, while missionaries such as Eusebio Kino and Francisco Garcés left their mark in the 1700s. Later, figures like Juan Bautista de Anza established routes that linked the region to Alta California. The name Los Algodones itself reflects its agricultural past—“cotton fields.” Yet today, the town is better known for its 600+ dental clinics, where one in ten residents is a dentist. Visitors, often called snowbirds or angels of the snow, flock here from the U.S. and Canada not only for affordable dental care but also for margaritas, tacos, and live music. Between 3,000 and 5,000 patients cross the border daily, transforming this compact, walkable town into a bustling hub of health and hospitality.

Despite the imposing steel border wall visible from nearly every corner of town, Los Algodones thrives as a symbol of binational interaction. For decades, families have lived and worked on both sides of the border, and until the 1970s, crossing required no passport.
